Abstract Doctrines of the atonement have tended either to elevate status one biblical metaphor or gather together various metaphors into a unified concept chorus equal metaphors. The purpose this article is shed light on how function, using by way reference contrasting interpretations Charles Hodge and Joel Green, who tend towards opposing theories language based naïve realism idealism respectively. Drawing work Colin Gunton, I recommend mediating approach critical realist theory which aims steer middle course between rationalism relativism. Such an approach, values epistemic revelatory potential metaphors, facilitated more integrative theological method with respect scripture, reason, tradition experience.
